Nicholas Latifi set for Indycar switch in 2023

October 19, 2022

Rumours are beginning to circulate that Williams Racing driver Nicholas Latifi will make the jump to Indycar with Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2023 season.

The rumours appear to have originated with Youtuber David Land, who cites one of his ‘sources’ in the Indycar paddock.

The apparent deal would be full-time (both road courses and ovals), with Latifi bringing a sizeable amount of money to the Chip Ganassi team in return for the drive, becoming the fourth driver in a four car team.

Land goes as far as to claim that the deal is so done that Latifi has a race number for next year – #11.

It was officially announced in September that Latifi would be leaving Williams Racing at the end of the season, almost certainly bringing his three year Formula 1 career to a close.

Latifi joined Williams in F1 in 2020 at a time when the team were struggling financially, and he and his father, billionaire Michael Latifi, brought much needed stability via sponsorship and loans.

However, with the team now on a much more secure financial footing after its sale to Dorilton Capital, it finds itself in a significantly better position to choose talent over money when finding a partner for de facto #1 driver Alex Albon.

Latifi has scored nine points for the Williams F1 team, with a best finish of 7th in last year’s Hungarian Grand Prix. However, recent mistakes and deficit to his team-mate made it increasingly likely that his time in F1 was coming to a close at the end of the year, even prior to an official announcement.

He seems like a great guy, and it’s great to see he’s (allegedly) found himself another drive at a high level. We wish him every success.
